I am still processing the finale, but I do have a quick thought about what just went down on my telly screen.
Throughout the finale, Lawnmower Man keeps referring to Cohle as the 'little priest'. Which begs the question, priest of what?
The Yellow King.
I think he probably thought the only way anyone would ever find him is if they were operating on the same wavelength. And if he was in the process of transcending to become The Yellow King, he would need a priest.
A priest who would keep the faith. A priest who would keep the faith over the course of decades. Who would keep the faith even when others – Hart, the other detectives – either forgot or fell for the cover up.
Why do we even know about the Yellow King? Who brought him forward, in spite of a mass coverup designed to pull him into the shadows and erase his deeds? Who focused our attention on the black stars and on Carcosa?
Rust Cohle. Priest of the Yellow King.
Time being a flat circle, we end where we began. And so we begin again.
