I'd been toying with the idea of another BPAL order when I got word of their leap day scent, Frederic, which had notes like rum, patchouli and amber musk, and I knew I had to have it. As well as some other things because, well, I was making an order anyway...

Frederic 2012. The perfect scent for a piratical man who has a softer, more romantic side, or women who are into that sort of man. At first this is all rum, patchouli and swagger, but after about an hour or so, it softens as the musk and rose begin to blossom. This is really great, and I have no idea how I'm going to make this bottle last for the next four years.

The Deep Ones. The Deep Ones smell better than you'd think. This reminds me of something just out of reach - a perfume I used to wear when I was a teenager. It's sharp, fruity and floral, and while the individual notes are virtually unidentifiable to my nose, if it were a colour, it would be a slithery aquatic teal. After about an hour, the sharpness tapers off and it becomes darkly, wonderfully aquatic. I need more of this.

Roadhouse. The sweetness of dandelion and tobacco, balanced by the bitterness of hops. If there is such a thing as a honky tonk angel, she probably smells a lot like this. Me, I am no honky tonk angel by any stretch of the imagination, but I do love dandelion, tobacco and hops, so I'd like to think I rock this one anyway.

Fire For Thy Stepmother's Daughters. This was not at all what I was expecting. Instead of fire and ash, I got flowers, candied cloves, and the merest wisp of sour smoke that was quickly blown away by the sweetness of the floral candy. A very pleasant surprise.

Bluebeard. Usually my skin amps musk, but the vetiver and violet quickly initially it before it had a chance to blossom. There is no softness or comfort here. Imagine jealousy and disappointment transforming themselves into a bitter, murderous rage; this is the scent of that transformation. It takes about an hour for the musk and the lavender to balance out the violence of the violet and vetiver, and then it becomes something a bit less visceral, although still unsettling. Evocative, but I can't see myself getting more of it.
